James Duncan was born in 1870. He was a shipwright working on the Discovery in Dundee when he was selected for the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott) as Able Seaman. The expedition made the first extensive exploration on land in Antarctica and examined the coast of Victoria Land and the Ross Ice Shelf. Duncan was a member of the shore party and took part in the sledging programme. He was awarded the Polar Medal for his part in the expedition. ...
